What Happens in Vegas Turns Up on TMZ

Prince Harry NakedA new week brings us new hot topics trending on the Internet. Last week we took a peek into the Paul Ryan announcement and WikiLeaks’s founder Julian Assange’s asylum in Ecuador. Though these subjects haven’t died down yet, this week we take a dive into fresher news. The very private life of Prince Harry, an extremely popular debate subject for the US election, and an unfortunate train wreck in Maryland are the three trending matters you can read about below.

Prince Harry Shows All

Earlier this week Prince Harry, third in line to the British throne, was caught with his pants down, literally. A trip to Vegas during his ‘private’ holiday from military duties found the prince playing strip billiards in a swanky hotel with the opposite sex. Nude photos were released by TMZ on Tuesday night and the rumors have been flying ever since. The story within this story is that UK tabloids aren’t able to run anything on the Prince due to a clause in the Press Complaints Commission Editor’s Code of Practice. The clause states: “It is unacceptable to photograph individuals in private places without their consent.” Seeing as Prince Harry was in a private room at his hotel, American tabloids have been all over this, while the UK press has to sit idly by. A story this popular has all the advertisers jumping on board.

Representative Akin’s Apology is Too Little Too Late

Todd Akin's political gaffe

An already popular discussion topic for the 2012 US Presidential campaign, women’s reproductive health and the choices that come with it, has really taken off in the last week with a less-than-popular statement. The internet has been going wild with news of Todd Akin, US Representative of Missouri who earlier this week made a political gaffe with his remark about rape. He stated that women’s bodies can prevent pregnancies in cases of what he called “legitimate rape”. This insinuation of a “woman’s biological response” to rape sparked outrage amongst women all over the nation, not to mention with both Democrats and Republicans. Akin later apologized for his statement, though the Republican Party is still asking him to withdraw his candidacy from the US Senate for which he is currently running.

Tweets May Piece Together Train Crash

Twitter Aids in Railroad Wreck

This week an unfortunate event occurred as two young college students were killed in a train wreck in Maryland. The coal carrying train was Baltimore-bound when it derailed and hit the two young women sitting on a bridge over the train tracks enjoying a summer evening. The two were posting on Twitter about their evening minutes before the accident and police say they will use the tweets to further their investigation. This is yet another example of social media collaborating with society in hard times and proving its worth.
